DJP Dumpsters

What Size Dumpster Do I Need?

The short version, from the people who take the calls: when in doubt, go up a size. The step up costs less than a second rental every single time. The overflowing small dumpster is the most common mistake in this business.

Think in Pickup Loads

A full-size pickup bed holds about 2.5 cubic yards. That makes the math simple enough to do while you look at the debris:

DumpsterPickup loadsThe job it fits
15-yardabout 6One room, a sorted garage, a small deck
20-yardabout 8A kitchen, a ranch roof, a full garage
20 Space Saverabout 8Same jobs, short driveway
30-yardabout 12A house, a demo, a big roof

Three Sizes, Four Dumpsters

We run three sizes: 15, 20 and 30 yards. The 20 comes in two shapes, a standard and a Space Saver, which is why four dumpsters are drawn below. All four are at the same scale, so the size difference you see is the size difference you get. Tap a drawing to open that dumpster's page.

Side view of the 15-yard dumpster: 12 feet long with 5-foot walls

15-yard · $349: 12 feet long, 5-foot walls. One-room jobs and sorted cleanouts.

Side view of the 20-yard Space Saver dumpster: 12 feet long with 6-foot walls

20-yard Space Saver · $449: the 15's footprint, one foot taller. The tight-driveway shape.

Side view of the 20-yard dumpster: 16 feet long with 5-foot walls

20-yard · $449: 16 feet, 5-foot walls. Where most house projects land.

Side view of the 30-yard dumpster: 20 feet long with 6-foot walls

30-yard · $600: 20 feet, 6-foot walls. The one we own the most of.

Weight Decides More Than Volume

Household debris fills the space before it hits the weight. Dense material is the reverse: shingles run about 250 pounds a square, concrete and dirt heavier still. A dumpster of pure concrete is past legal road weight long before it looks full. If much of your load is shingles, tile, plaster, dirt or concrete, say so on the phone. We will size by the ton instead of the yard and nobody gets surprised by the scale ticket.

Sizing Questions

How many pickup truck loads fit in each dumpster?

Rough math that holds up: a full-size pickup bed is about 2.5 cubic yards. So the 15-yard is about 6 pickup loads, the 20 is about 8, and the 30 is about 12. If you can picture the project as pickup loads, you can size the dumpster.

What size dumpster do I need for a kitchen remodel?

The 20-yard. Cabinets, counters, flooring and the demo debris fit with room left. If the remodel reaches past the kitchen, step up to the 30.

What size dumpster for a roof?

Squares decide it. Up to about 30 squares, single layer: the 20. More squares or a second layer: the 30, because shingles hit the weight limit before the volume. Tell us squares and layers on the phone.

What size dumpster for a full-house cleanout?

The 30, and a genuinely full house is two of them. Furniture eats volume fast. Nobody doing a house cleanout has ever told us the 30 was too big.

Is it better to get a dumpster too big or too small?

Too big, every time. And this is us telling you to spend less. The step up to the next size is always cheaper than a second rental. The overflowing 15-yard is the most common regret we see.

What towns do you deliver every size to?

All four sizes go everywhere on the route: Spartanburg, Greenville and Laurens counties. The service area page has the town list.

"From start to finish this company was outstanding to work with. Archie was so helpful & accommodating - he went above and beyond to get a dumpster to us & also picking it up. Payment was easy & quick with Carrie and their prices were the best by far in the area. I highly recommend this group for all your waste removal needs."
